Trademark Registration

The Egyption law in force allows for the registration of "individual" and collective trademarks.

"Individual" trademarks are used to distinguish products or services of a specific company.

"Collective" trademarks can be registered by those subjects (natural or legal persons) in charge of guaranteeing the origin, nature or quality of products or services, it being provided that collective trademarks can be used by different subjects other than the owner of the registration, who are somehow related to him. For example, this is the case when a trademark is registered by a consortium and then used by all companies belonging to it.

Trademark registration is determined in Egypt by the trademark law of 2002. It takes between 9-12 months from filing to issuing a certificate of registration in Egypt . Once a trademark is registered, it will be protected in Saudi Arabia for 10 years and it will subject to renewal for similar period(s) every ten years.

International Classification of Goods and Service are followed in Egypt and multi-class application is not available. Saudi Arabia has been a signatory country to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property since 1951and its trademark law is generally in compliance with the Paris Convention.
